“One’s sentiments — call them that — one’s fidelities are so instinctive that one hardly knows they exist, wrote author Elizabeth Bowen in The Death of the Heart; only when they are betrayed or, worse still, when one betrays them does one realize their power. There is no space I hate more than a hospital, and this one is no exception. I stand in the sterile hallway, smell antiseptic and sickness, listen to the faint beeping of the machines that keep patients like my ex alive. Why am I even here?
