Operation Ady Gil Yesterday I posted a commentary on Ady Gil. It was seen by 133,000 people. There were 1784 likes and 544 comments. I think it got Adys attention. Most of the comments supported my posting, a few including one from a Faeroese whaler did not. I have now deleted the post as a gesture to Ady Gil. I now request that in return, he in turn, dismisses the frivolous law suit he brought against Sea Shepherd and myself. Only he has the power to resolve this conflict. Ady has reported to a third party that he has received a death threat over this. For the record I do not encourage or condone such threats but I have to say that I get a couple of death threats a week so it does not impress me much that he has received but one. I do realize that getting death threats for saving whales, seals, dolphins and fish is quite different than getting one in response to suing a conservation organization trying to save whales, dolphins, seals and fish. For people saying that I should not be airing dirty laundry in public. Hello, this is my Facebook book and thus hardly public. Ady on the other hand when he filed the suit took it to TMZ to publicize it. He seems quite proud of wanting to destroy Sea Shepherd. We have not gone public - Yet! For people saying this is a personal issue between Ady Gil and myself. Not so. This is about a man filing a lawsuit against a charitable conservation organization that has a prestigious record of saving marine wildlife. That is not personal. It is a vindictive frivolous lawsuit that should not be tucked away in some dark corner and not discussed. If anyone knows Sea Shepherd or myself at all they will understand that we are not passive when attacked and when we go on the offensive it is a very passionate, aggressive and focused campaign. We have not yet done this with Ady Gil but unless he withdraws his legal suit and reins in his lawyers we will strategize a very focused campaign to expose his motivations and his character. What Ady Gil is doing is no different than what the Japanese whalers are doing. They are both taking Sea Shepherd to court in an attempt to shut us down and to prevent our interventions to defend bio-diversity and the lives of sentient, intelligent, socially complex beings in our oceans. Ady Gil waited for three years until the whalers had us down on our knees fighting for survival in the courts. That is when he chose to come in from behind and kick us in the backside with his lawsuit forcing us to rally more lawyers to defend ourselves. Ady Gil is well aware that justice in America is a bought and paid for enterprise and he is willing to throw money at us to force us to waste money defending ourselves from his suit. He wants $50 million dollars. $5 million to replace the boat that he paid 1 million for that was destroyed by the Japanese whalers and another $45 million in punitive damages to punish Sea Shepherd because the Japanese destroyed the boat that has his name on it. Instead of suing the party that actually destroyed the boat, he chooses to sue the organization that is fighting the Japanese whalers. We asked him to join us in a collective lawsuit against the Japanese whalers. He refused. We offered to name another boat after him (although we were under no legal requirement to do so.) to appease his desire for ego gratification and he refused, saying the boat was not big enough or impressive enough for him. Instead he has decided to do what the whalers, sealers and tuna poachers have done - use the courts as a weapon to shut us down. In this respect they are allied to the same objective and both our threats to our survival as an organization and a movement. We have so far beaten the Japanese whalers and the Maltese fishermen in the courts and now we are forced to expend energy and funds to beat this ridiculous lawsuit by a man whose is upset because his boat was destroyed by the whalers. And what amazes me is that in destroying that boat, the Japanese made Ady Gil famous and his name was in headlines around the world. As such he was a hero UNTIL he decided to bring shame upon his name by boasting that he intends to make Sea Shepherd pay for the loss of his boat. I think Ady Gil must have been under the impression that it was all fun and games in the Southern Ocean until his boat got run over. The TV show is called Whale Wars after all. And somehow or other he is now under the impression that he can remain a hero to the animal rights movement by doling out cash donations to various charities. He firmly believes that his money will buy both support and adulation and for some this may be true. The tragedy of this however is that whereas the name Ady Gil could have been enshrined in the history of activism, it will now be enshrined as the person who attempted to destroy Sea Shepherd. And I say attempted, because although it will cost us to defend ourselves, we will prevail over his desires and we will continue to defend life on the high seas from the greed and ignorance of humankind so accurately symbolized by this man Ady Gil.
