Orator: Feirjohn Painagan A CALL FOR CHANGE: A call to save Mother Earth. In the book of Genesis, right before human existence, God created everything good. He created the earth –everything on it! - Air, land, water, seas and all the richness that sprung from the womb of life. He then created us- human beings, his superb and beloved masterpiece, and the greatest among his creation. He endowed human with talents, skills and above all intelligence to manage and protect everything that is entrusted to him. Rational thinkers! That’s what human beings are. We have the ability to think, not just think, but to criticize, to analyze and decide what is wrong from right and what is just or not. As I browsed the pages of the antiquity of time, I realized how fortunate we are! We are provided with everything we need in an environment that cradled us in the hammock of comfortable living. Amidst the progress of human civilization with the re-current flow of technological advancement, there lies in the bosom of human existence; a cry that echoes from generations to generations, a call for human survival! People turn and hold on to nature – to its richness and bountiful wealth. Because of these, our mother earth is confronted to the growing wants, needs and demands of humanity. People tend to ask more from what the nature can only afford to give. Forest trees are being cut down to produce various products, rice fields are converted into various plantations, hi-graded mountains are mined endlessly for the valuable and expensive gold and other minerals, many open areas are made for building constructions, malls and village houses. People brilliantly invented machineries and build factories which release substances that destroy the very sturdy “ceiling” of the earth’s ozone layer. We become greedy, we grow selfish! We consider every change as positive because we benefited from it, without even thinking the very distressing effects it may give to our environment. We went out into the world as successful species but completely a failure as sons and daughters of Mother Earth. We fail to recognize that along with this success, various species of wildlife come to extinction because of the destruction we’ve caused to their natural habitat. As we continue sailing the ocean of technological advancement, marine life faces turmoil of destructions in their underground paradise. How cruel it seems! Yet we continue to produce poisonous non-biodegradable trashes, which are just thrown everywhere after being used. That soon if these are accumulated will put everyone’s life in danger, including the life of the innocent one. When are we going to stop this cruelty? Are we all waiting for the time when the nature takes its fierceful revenge on us? As I watch television and read the news, I heard the phenomenal problems of pollution, erosion, landslide, global warming, flash floods, storms, typhoons and many more bombarding our societies. The effects of these catastrophes and man-made calamities were imprinted into my mind, echoed at back of my memory. Who could ever forget Bagyong Pablo, Sendong, Ondoy, the Masara and Pantukan Landslide? who devastated many of our brothers and sisters properties and worst of all, took the life of their loved ones. So terrifying! So Horrible! We cannot deny the fact, that we are all part of this detrimental problem which others have suffered. I am aware that there is no other way for us to totally eradicate those activities because if we do it, that would mean that human civilization would have to move backwards and embrace its primitive ways of living. But what I am opting for is to seek ways through which at least, we could lessen the degree of destruction we do to our nature. It might be very impossible to do it, especially for a student like me whose voice maybe too weak enough to be heard. But, I believe, there is still only one thing that we can do. Change. A word that echoed from the heart of this young fellow, as I stand here in front of you, I , who wish of nothing but to see a better and safe world for my children’s grandchildren . A change of attitude, personality, outlook in life and actions may do not matter to you but for me! and to all my brothers and sisters whose aspirations same with mine, matters most! A change that must begin within us. Communal change is what I longed and prayed for! And I want to share this vision to you. The vision that someday, may we be all united in achieving the common vision, with sincere dedication, of saving our Mother Earth. We may be born in different situations, divided with varied principles, and raised on different environments but with the right tool of communication, may we find the common ground for our shared aspirations. May we find the common language that would bind us all. As a student of a catholic institution, who loves and respects life more than enough, I want to impart to you my friends, teachers and to this Christian community that if we want to change the world, it should start within ourselves, with the values that we have and be in communion with others, for us to continue the path of shared vision with communal concern for Mother Earth. As, Filipinos we can and must act now. Nobody will do it for us. This is our home; we must care for it, watch over, protect it and love it. Do it now, before it’s too late. To God be the glory. Good day everyone.
