[Our Biodiversity] Don’t be alarmed if you see ‘snakes’ - TopicsExpress

[Our Biodiversity] Don’t be alarmed if you see ‘snakes’ hanging from this tree! These are not reptiles lying in wait for prey but are actually the fruits of the Snake Tree (Stereospermum fimbriatum). Snake Trees have been planted at the Gardens since 1882, although there is only one surviving from the Gardens’ early days, a Heritage Tree near the Swan Lake. This tree produces delicate pink-lilac flowers that look like ballet tutu skirts and fall like snowflakes to carpet the ground. Drop by the Gardens between the months of January and April, and if you’re lucky, you’ll get to see the beautiful flowers or strange fruit of the Snake Tree. Learn more about the Snake Tree on Flora Fauna Web at bit.ly/1r97qQH or from the ‘Tall Tales: Heritage Trees Trail Guide’ book available at the Gardens Shop @ Nassim Gate, Library Shop and major bookstores at $9.50. #singaporebotanicgardens #sbgourbiodiversity #sbg #heritagetree #talltales
