Our comments on convenience: We are no longer in a society that one expects to work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week for 52 weeks. There are just too many other work opportunities out there that do not require that. While a young person, in a corporate environment, may have to put in those hours at first, they do so hoping to move up the ladder to a more comfortable work schedule. That will never happen in farming. A 12 hour day today, just means that there will be another 12 hour day tomorrow. Many young folks enter farming with a romantic notion. They are soon disillusioned and decide that that job in the city wasn’t so bad. The turnover in organic/sustainable farming is huge. Romance is a great way to start a relationship but it is a horrible way to keep one going. If you want to make enough money to live a reasonably successful life: To be able to send you children to college and to take a vacation every once in a while; farming just ain’t the way to go. Consumers make way too many demands on the farmer. They want them to spend every waking minute to be sure that the food they are buying is the best. Then they want them at the farmer’s market on Thursday afternoon/evening and all day Saturday. You are asking them to be excellent farmers, to understand soil biology, animal/plant health, and food preparation. They also need to be mechanics, electricians, welders, and carpenters, just to name a few other required trades. Now, on top of all that, at the farmer’s market, you require that they be marketers and salesmen. For those of you who understand skill sets. It is rare that anyone can have all these skills and be successful at each one. Thus, be careful of buying food that is presented in a convenient manner. Something is being sacrificed.
