Out on the road and rolling along.Tonight we are in Solana Beach --San Diego -- and the Belly Up. Last night was the Roxy in LA. Mick came to watch and say hi, and the show went well. There was little drama at the first of the show when someone had some trouble -- like a seizure, or something. I was impressed at how quickly those around her jumped to her aid and how the whole audience became very still and supportive as she struggled through the worst moments of the attack. She calmed in just a few moments as we all waited quietly. By the time her friends had helped her outside, and the Paramedics came she was mostly back to normal. The crowd was impressive in the way they handled it all. Very respectful, quiet and watchful. I found out by the end of the show that the woman recovered completely and I reported that to the crowd just before we sang the last song. They all cheered. We really are one of the very few species that help each other out in trouble -- that heal one another. It was nice to be part of that. Chris Scruggs, the steel guitar and mandolin player had a baby -- so he couldnt make the tour. He stayed home with his wife, tending to the joys of a new family. We all miss him but I have to say the guys he sent out to sub for him are outstanding. Larry Hall is subbing keys for Boh Cooper and he played some monster solos last night -- real creative and high tech improv. Christian my son is playing with us through tonight, then he is off on his Zepagain tour. Ill miss him too. He played well last night. Its a lot of fun to discover how everyone handles the instrumental solos they have. Its one of the places you can see the real musician shine through. Meet and Greets went well -- lots of cool stuff from over the years to sign and I caught up with some old acquaintances and people that are only connected through the full six degrees. Today I just got off the phone with the fact checker from the New Yorker Magazine that I understand are planning to run a Talk of the Town piece on Monday about the Monkees Convention. It was the usual press stuff -- how much did you inherit from your Mom, how much did you make off the convention, did some guy really show up in a MonkeeMan suit, etc. -- focused on the meaningless and fatuous. Surreal if not unreal. Then they wonder why the printed press is struggling so hard. I have to say I love the New Yorker -- even though they can get pretty snarky. Their online book is great, too -- the best one out there IMO. I just hope they can hold on to their sense of humor and their great smart writers as we all go through this Internet transition. We shall see. The fact check questions did not seem too promising. Tonight it is back onstage live again -- and that is where it is all as real as it gets. Blazing solos, a new baby, and a whole theater of people pulling together in quiet respectful silence to get one of our kind who was in trouble into good hands and safely to shore. Thats the real deal. Thats the good stuff.
