Overheard Parents Association: This is from a parent. I salute you. PARENT 1: TO THE PARENT who complained about her son having to do PT, which shockingly resulted in changes to rook training that dishonors 150 years of history and every cadet who has survived rookdom...if you could not grasp the concept that Norwich is a military college with a tradition and responsibilty of producing young men and women who are mentally and physically, as well as academically a cut above, perhaps you should have sent your child to a school more suited to your sensibilities. TO THOSE PARENTS with a clearer understanding that earning the right to call yourself a Norwich cadet is supposed to be very difficult and challenging (and therefore not meant for everyone), I suggest you make your voices heard and question what is currently going on with their training. While change is sometimes necessary and positive, there is no denying there has been a progressive dumbing-down of the rook experience over the years that has justifiably earned ridicule from each succeeding graduating class. This latest blow to tradition is seriously demoralizing the cadre and will make recognition a hollow achievement compared to those who have gone before. No one likes being a rook. My son was one last year. My husband and I were rooks 30 years ago. But there is absolutely nothing like the feeling of having made it through the fire and being amazed at all you were able to accomplish. The schools response to one mothers ill-founded complaint only serves to diminish that feeling and diminish the proud legacy that has made Norwich University such a special institution. If you respect your childs decision to attend Norwich, please consider making your own demands that your rooks get the traditional training they deserve.
