PEARCE VOTES TO STOP NSA DRAGNET, PROTECT CIVIL LIBERTIES Washington, DC (May 22, 2014) Today, Congressman Steve Pearce voted for HR 3361, the USA Freedom Act. This important legislation increases accountability in domestic surveillance, including the creation of a Special Advocate for civil liberties and constitutional issues to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Court, and ends the federal government’s ability to collect bulk telephone records data. “I was an original cosponsor on HR 3361, because it is imperative that Congress correct instances of civil liberties violations,” Pearce said. “The disclosure last year of the National Security Agency’s massive dragnet of data collection caused significant alarm. Today, Congress took a major step toward fixing this problem, and returning the PATRIOT Act to its original intent: targeting those who wish to harm Americans, and preventing terrorist attacks. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to act on this legislation immediately.” NOTE: The USA Freedom Act passed overwhelmingly on a 303 to 12 bipartisan vote. The Senate version, S. 1599, is sponsored by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Pat Leahy (D-VT), and includes 21 cosponsors from both parties.
