PETTY BUREAUCRATS IMPOSE PETTY REGULATIONS ON PETTY CRIMES REDUX: IN QUEBEC’S OUTAOUAIS REGION, A 1930S-ERA DECREE LETS A COMMITTEE DECIDE WHEN HAIRDRESSERS CAN CUT YOUR HAIR By Tristin Hopper, National Post Newspaper, July 18 2013 news.nationalpost/2013/07/18/in-quebecs-outaouais-region-when-where-and-how-much-you-pay-to-cut-your-hair-is-decided-by-committee/ “Last month, for Quebec’s June 24 holiday, Gatineau hairdresser Sylvie Rose intended to set up a small kiosk to promote her employer, Studio Hullywood, to revellers. “Of course, Ms. Rose operates in Outaouais, the only part of Canada in which every aspect of hairdressing — from minimum prices to opening hours — remains strictly controlled by a government-mandated committee. “If Ms. Rose set up a table at Gatineau’s municipal celebrations during a mandatory holiday, the Joint Committee of Outaouais Hairdressers told her, she would face fines of more than $1,500... “The Outaouais Joint Committee also controls minimum haircutting prices. On Wednesday, acting on a committee request, the Quebec government announced that the base cost of an Outaouais haircut would be boosted from $15 to $17. “For opponents, it was a clear sign of how out-of-touch the committee has become. ‘Me, I don’t know one salon that charges $15 a cut,’ said Dominique Brisebois, owner of Gatineau’s atmosp’hair and the public face of the anti-committee movement…” MY OWN RESPONSE: Obviously, Outaouais taxpayers are taking a haircut, paying these high-paid bureaucrats to meddle in the private sector. After all, the wages -- of these uncivil servants -- come from taxpayer money (likely including the tax payments of Sylvie Rose herself).
