PLATFORM Embrace our culture, preserve our heritage, be proud to be a Turks Islander. Upon entering college I was introduce to a class I found rather interesting, TCI Studies. This class covers the basic history of The Turks & Islands, the texts In reference was A History of the Turks & Caicos islands written by Dr Carlton Mills. For the first class we were given a pop quiz, Just 20 simple short answer questions about our beloved island. To my surprise this was no run over for some of my classmates. Grades ranging from 5/20,7/20 10/20 to name a few, I myself received 15/20. Our lecture was astonished by these grades, I myself was also disappointed by them as well. Although I got 15 answers correct I was applaud that I did not know the answers to the other five questions, speaking in my classmates defense I assume they honestly didnt known them either. This had me thinking, why on earth a group of college students is unable to answer simple questions about the island we inhabit, the island we were born and raised in? It was obvious it had nothing to do with our general intelligence because we all successfully completed high school and we all were accepted Into college because of our outstanding performances. Analyzing the case I came to the conclusion that the youth of the TCI is detached from our heritage & culture. With todays modernization its seem it is quite difficult to be caught up with the things going on in our own country when the access to other countries culture & practices is easily assessable due to the use of television, social media & the internet. For this reason it was easy for me to choose a platform which is EMBRACE OUR CULTURE, PRESERVE OUR HERITAGE, BE PROUD TO BE A TURKS ISLANDER. I myself am very patriotic, & it is my hope to instill this mentality is ALL youth of the Turks & Caicos. If you dont know where you come from how can you tell where you are going? We are the future of these islands, so ask yourself is my future in good hands? Its never to late to make a difference.
