The confidential document identifies the Sergi clan as the group probably responsible for murdering Australian Federal Police assistant commissioner Colin Winchester in 1989. Six Sergis based in Griffith, New South Wales, were named by a royal commissioner in 1979 as being members of the Calabrian mafia. One, winery owner Tony Sergi, 78, was also described by the Woodward royal commission as the boss of Griffiths booming marijuana industry. He has consistently denied the allegations. Mr Sergi told the Herald Sun in 1997 he was not involved in murders or any other crimes. Former public servant David Eastman following his arrest for the murder of Colin Winchester. Extracts from the secret police document were revealed by the Australian Capital Territorys Director of Public Prosecutions in a recent submission to a judicial inquiry. The inquiry, which was set up after a successful legal battle by Winchesters convicted killer, began hearing evidence in Canberra last week. Former public servant David Eastman, who was jailed for life, is trying to use the document to convince the inquiry he is innocent and the mafia guilty. The Herald Sun has been told later documents produced by police following further investigation, also to be produced at the inquiry, discount the mafia did it theory. The DPPs recent submission included a 2005 letter to the ACT chief justice in which Eastman, arguing for the inquiry, quotes from secret police documents that explore the possibility of Calabrian mafia involvement. Referring to strong hypotheses consistent with my innocence, he wrote These hypotheses concern the strong likelihood that the murder was drug-related and was committed by organised crime. I enclose a copy of MFI-130, which is a police report which concludes … the murder was committed by the Sergi organised crime group. I also enclose a copy of MFI-23, which is another police report, that says … that investigation of the organised crime leads should continue and this could eventually provide information or evidence directly linked to the murder. One of the detectives … told my lawyers in 1998 that those inquiries were never satisfactorily completed. It is believed Eastman was mistakenly sent the confidential police documents during the legal discovery process while he was fighting to get the judicial inquiry.
