PLEASE LISTEN INTELLIGENTLY TO WHAT IM ABOUT TO SAY. I dont mean to sound as though Im scolding anyone or to sound arrogant or condescending - THATS NEVER MY INTENTION. Ive seen several posts today from people who are upset that Illinois now has a republican governor and they voiced concern about programs being cut and how its going to affect the black community specifically but I feel the need to remind black people of something. We spend 1 TRILLION dollars every year in this country regardless of the political ideology or affiliation of the officials we elect - and we only spend 5 cents out of each of those TRILLION dollars with ourselves (black owned businesses). It doesnt matter who gets into office, whether theyre republican or democrat theyre not pumping a TRILLION dollars into our community but thats how much we let escape every year because we spend indiscriminately and without discretion........ AND THERE IS OUR PROBLEM! We spend enough money to educate, employ, feed and clothe and provide any other service for ourselves that we may need. Theres nothing that we need done that we cant do for ourselves. We just have to decide that we want to do it. If were truly concerned about whats happening with us and our communities we need to step out of those lines that we stand in for 2 or 3 hours just to spend $200 on a pair sneakers or a hand bag or a video game console and keep that money in your pocket. The hours that we spend entertaining ourselves with TV shows and football and basketball games, we should spend at least half that time seeking out individuals who are interested in developing POWER and then come together to formulate and execute ideas and plans to actually gain POWER. We have to begin to question the political functions of our tastes, habits and desires. What I basically mean is......... ask yourself, who benefits form the fact that we HAVE to have the latest sneakers or jeans or other material item? What would we spend our money on if we werent spending it on this material shit that enriches everyone except us? How would we spend our time if we werent busy spending it glued to a TV for 5 or 6 hours? There is a political function and purpose to our ideas and habits that dont benefit us. There can be no revolution when our primary concern is comfort and entertainment. This concern cant be demonstrated only for a few days around election time. This has to become a way of life. You cant put your hope in the idea of getting a democrat elected to office. Ultimately our salvation lies in how much POWER we have. How much POWER are we able to acquire and develop? I define POWER simply as - the ability to respond. How capable are we to employ, educate, feed and clothe ourselves and protect our interests. As I said before.......... Theres nothing that we need done that we cant do for ourselves. We just have to decide that we want to do it. ITS NOT IMPOSSIBLE. Marcus Garvey was able to organize 15 million black people on 4 different continents in the early 1900s all without TV, radio or the internet. It was just black people on fire with the idea of self reliance and independence and who were willing to discipline themselves and put in the work. We dont have any excuse! Why do you think we dont learn about him school? Just go do a little research on him and youll see why. If Black people in this country would only move as a unit we have the 9th largest economy in the world. We need to begin to start to act, think and move as a nation. BLACK POWER!
