POLITICO BREAKING NEWS: U.S., China announce ambitious climate goals: President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping jointly announced tonight that their nations are pledging to make steep cuts in their carbon emissions in the next two decades. Obama said the U.S. will cut its net greenhouse gas emissions by 26 to 28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025, sharply accelerating the pace of reductions already planned by 2020. Xi said China will aim to have its carbon emissions stop rising by 2030 — and said that by then, the Chinese will draw a fifth of their energy supply from non-fossil-fuel sources. The announcement came weeks sooner than expected, and would undercut GOP objections that the U.S. can’t act on climate change unless China also does its part. China is the world’s biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, and the U.S. ranks second. (via POLITICO app for iOS)
