POWER, FAME & FORTUNE We all dream of attaining such things as power, fame and fortune, us mere mortals. About this, there can be no doubt!! We buy lottery tickets for that one chance in a million. We dream about singing or acting in the movies, television or even on stage. But what if it actually happened and we really did make it BIG at something? Could we handle it first of all, and would it really make our lives better? Most of us certainly think we know the answers to these questions. After all, these are easy questions and answers, n’est-ce pas (aren’t they)? But what about after, when all the euphoria has dissipated, and we realize, once again, that we still have to live with the person whom we are, inside and out. We still have to live with our own physical, intellectual and emotional being, as well as our individual soul and human psyche. If we are truly honest with ourselves, we realize we must still deal with that all-important question, “Are we really happy and satisfied with the kind of person we have become, our thoughts, behaviours and actions, including the motives behind them?” In other words, are we really pleased with the person we see looking back at us in the mirror each morning? This brings us back to the topic of power, fame and fortune. How can we use these things to our advantage, thus improving the true quality of life for ourselves as well as others? For make no mistake about this, the attitudes and actions involved in giving and receiving (to and from others respectively) are all tied together in a very logical, neat package, almost mathematical in nature. That which we receive back from others is very closely related to what we give, in like manner, degree and amount. Strange as it may seem, it is actually up to each and every one of us to create our own destiny. We can choose happiness and joy over sadness and despair, flying like an eagle above the clouds, dancing with the stars and beyond. While we can’t always control what happens to us, we can try to shape the attitudes we hold about events that occur in our daily lives. If we approach life with a sense of openness, wonder and amazement, it will certainly affect the outcomes, as evidenced by our resulting attitudes and actions. There will still be times of sadness and despair, because none of us lives in a vacuum. But with the appropriate outlook on life, these negative times will be shorter in duration and generally less frequent. Let’s return to our old friends once again, POWER, FAME & FORTUNE, for some deeper insight and meaning. Will they make us happy, helping us to lead better, more productive lives? Yes, they can be a definite factor and ally in this process, if approached with a proper perspective. But are they really and truly necessary elements in the overall attainment of joy and happiness? Probably not. For this trio (power, fame & fortune) does not really fuel our inner sense of self, although at times it may seem like they do. Rather, this is generated by the facts about ourselves which we know to be true, not by perceptions. We may try, but we can never truly fool ourselves for very long about the kind of people we are and what we truly represent. This knowledge resides within our heart, mind, spirit and soul and is always available to us, if we so choose to listen. Our goals might then become those of the highest order: kindness, caring, respect and sensitivity to others, as well as excellence and achievement for all people. These qualities and characteristics have stood the test of time, and ultimately keep coming back again and again!!! For they blend in with our own personalities, making each of us special and unique, able to perform great tasks, for ourselves as well as others!!! Brian D.
