PRESS RELEASE FROM THE COUNCIL ABOUT TOMORROWS SEVERE WEATHER. The multi-agency Emergency Planning Group for the Western Isles, WIEPCG, met today to discuss the severe weather forecast for the Islands on Friday 31st January and Saturday 1st February. 60-70 mph winds are forecasted with exceptionally high tides tomorrow morning and a storm surge which will affect the Bràighe in particular. SEPA have issued the following flood warning – ‘Coastal flooding is possible over the next few days. During the Friday periods of High Water, which are expected around 7 am and 7 pm in Stornoway, there is a risk of wave and spray overtopping in areas exposed to the south and east. The tide at 8 am on Saturday morning is forecast to be very high, possibly higher than that seen on 3rd January. These High Water levels will give impacts in combination with wind and wave effects. There is a risk of property flooding, particularly in Stornoway, where there may be disruption in the harbour area. SEPA are monitoring the situation and will update this alert as more information becomes available.’ Local businesses have been contacted and provided with sandbags. There are also sandbags available for public use in the Bayhead area of Stornoway. CnES Roads will be monitoring Seilebost Causeway and Uist causeways. The Bràighe will also be monitored. School buses are scheduled to run as normal tomorrow morning, however, should buses be late in arriving at the Nicolson Institute due to any issues at the Bràighe, alternative arrangements will be made for senior pupils to sit their prelim examinations in the afternoon. Morning home care could be delayed on Friday morning. Mobile Overnight Support Service (MOSS) users will be contacted directly. The severe weather may cause further disruption to services. Updates will be provided via the Public Information section of the Comhairle’s website. Twitter: @cne_siar WIEPCG are on Facebook where information will also be updated as appropriate.
