PROTEIN Prevents Muscle Loss With Age. People lose about 20 percent of their muscle mass between ages 40 and 60, a condition called Sarcopenia. A review of literature by Douglas Adam, Paddon Jones and Heather Leidy from the university of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston concluded that Sacropenia impairs blood sugar regulation, interferes with independent living, triggers joint deterioration and increase the risk of falls. A simple solution is to consume 30 grams of protein with each meal. High protein meals promote weight control and preserve lean body mass, even in the absence of exercise. Amino acids in proteins, particularly Leucine, activate key muscle pathways that trigger protein synthesis. (Current Opinion Clinical Nutrition Metabolic Care, 17: 5-11, 2014) [MD]
