Parents and friends of HB: This week, the school board approved - TopicsExpress

Parents and friends of HB: This week, the school board approved a decision-making framework to address enrollment growth in Arlington schools. The presentation, made by the group More Seats for Students, is attached. Check out page 22. The decoupling idea, where the HB middle and HS would be placed in separate schools is not included. However, the framework suggests two ways for HB to contribute to relieving overcrowding in the county. The first proposal is to expand HB by up to 600 additional students, presumably at the existing site. The second is to move the HB Woodlawn program to an undetermined leased space and to replace it with a 1200 seat traditional middle school. Obviously, both options would have major impacts on the HB program. HB students are aware of the proposals, and discussed them at a very well attended town meeting this morning. Students are anxious to respond to both ideas and want to work with the PAC to communicate with the board. The PAC would like for form a group of parents, staff, and students to respond to both suggestions, and to offer constructive ideas for how HB can contribute to relieving overcrowding in Arlington schools without jeopardizing the HB program. Also, well develop a strategy for communicating the communities concerns to the school board. Our first meeting will be this Monday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the HB library. Please join us if youd like to be involved. If you cannot participate, but would like to be kept aware the the PACs work on this issue, look in the next few days for a new section on the PAC pages of the HB website devoted to the topic. Well post all correspondence between the PAC and the board, as well as a timeline for the committees actions. The school board will host an open community forum to discuss the framework next Wednesday, February 5 in the Washington Lee Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. The next few months is our window to influence the groups recommendations to the board, which will be presented with a final plan in May. If you have questions, or would like to talk about the issue, call or email Mary Byrne. 703/608-9726 or marybyrne1@mac.
