Pastor Mikes Daily Devotion Tuesday January 21, 2014 Matthew 14:3–4, For Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife. Because John had said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” You have seen the cartoon from the 1960s. The cat has the canary in his claws, and arrives at the moment of decision...eat it, or set it free. There sits on the cats left shoulder, whispering in his ear, an image of himself with horns, a pointed tail, and a pitchfork, telling him to go ahead and eat the bird. On his right shoulder sits another image of himself in a white robe and a halo, telling him to not eat the bird. Decisions, decisions! The cat gives in, flicks his angelic self off of his shoulder, and puts the bird in his mouth. It is the same decision that Herod was faced with; does he listen to the voice of sin and give into the flesh, or to the voice of reason and obey the Spirit? Just like the cat, he gave into the flesh when he took his brothers wife as his own. It is not enough to listen to the voice of the flesh though, Herod and his mistress must also quiet the voice of conviction. That voice of conviction is the Holy Spirit working through John the Baptist. The ear that God gave man to hear the voice of conviction is our conscience. The only reason that Herods conscience was convicted is because John spoke truth, and Herod was contrary to that truth (sin). Herod made the decision to finally kill off the conviction in his life by executing John. The conviction of the Holy Spirit is not a comfortable thing to hear, but the only reason conviction comes is because we are not living according to Gods will. What has God told you through His word? How has He convicted you through a fellow believer? If you know God is calling you to make a change, do it today. To put it off is to callous your conscience and kill off the voice of reason in your life. Titus 1:15, To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled.
