As the Bible instructs us we are to do this often in remembrance of Our Lord. We would be honored to have you join with us in the observance of communion. Did you know that there is supernatural power when you partake of communion? In my own life, I have made it through many challenges by submitting myself to the power of Jesus Christ through communion, right in the privacy of my own home. When we partake of communion, we are recognizing the power of what Jesus did when He died on the cross. We are acknowledging that supernatural work and honoring who He is in our lives. God gave His only Son so that we could have a relationship with the Father. Not only does He want us to live an abundant life on this earth, but an abundant life with Him in eternity. John chapter three tells us, “Whosoever believes on the Lord Jesus Christ shall be saved.” When you partake of communion, you are saying with your actions, “I believe.” The best part is, you don’t have to wait until church on Sunday to partake of communion. You don’t need a minister to serve you. Scripture says that Jesus Himself is your high priest. (Hebrews 4:14) You can simply use crackers and grape juice, bread and water, or whatever you have that can symbolize the body and blood of Jesus. See, it’s not the elements that hold the power; it’s your faith in Him. It’s your obedience to His Word that says, “Do this in remembrance of Me.” I encourage you to find time on a regular basis to honor the Lord through communion and discover the blessing of fellowshipping with our Heavenly Father in such a personal way. The script for our service is below. Please feel free to share. Welcome to our Communion Ceremony Our service is divided into several sections to help call our attention to several aspects of why and how we observe the “New Covenant Communion”. For those of us who observe the New Covenant; “Communion” is an opportunity to “remember” the example of Jesus, and to reaffirm our commitment to walk in mercy, while holding to grace; both of which are critical elements of an authentic Christian walk. Therefore, the focus of this ceremony should always be on remembering the meaning and symbolism of words read or spoken, while keeping our souls open to “receiving” any leading or re-direction from the Spirit. We will now continue with a reading called “The Paradox of Communion”. Christ calls us all to communion. The table of His remembrance is prepared. He takes the bread. – He is the bread. He breaks the bread, He breaks Himself and offers this brokenness to us explaining that if we take it, we ourselves must be broken and consumed. He takes the cup. It is the pouring out of Himself. He says, won’t you, too, be poured out with me? The table is long and spans for centuries. Some leave the table to and search for wealth. Some chairs were empty from the start, although many were invited Some had wives to marry, parents to bury, houses to build, empires to manage. Those who have come are a mixed blend of all ages and nationalities, races and genders. But we are all poor, hungry and needy. Slowly, they break the bread-again and again-and Lift the morsels to their mouths. It does not go down easily. Sometimes it sticks in the throat… until the juice is passed. The pressed and poured-out fruit washes away the dryness. The bread—His flesh And the juice His life’s blood— Together make a sacrament of joy…. And the rite of communion becomes a celebration of the paradox…. In the BREAKING…we have become WHOLE. In the POURING OUT….we have been FILLED. In bringing our POVERTY and HUNGER and NEED, we have been made RICH. In daring to sit with the seekers, whose DIFFERENCES we do not understand, We have been made ONE. Christ “The Paradox” walks here among us. He is the BROKEN, and He is the HEALER. He is the HUNGRY and He is the BREAD OF LIFE. He is the HOMELESS, yet it is He who says, “Come to me all of you who are over-loaded, and I will be your RESTING PLACE.” He is the one viewed by many as the LOSER, who makes losing our way to WIN. He is the OMNIPOTENT who call all who follow to choose POWERLESSNESS and teaches us how by laying down all power in Heaven and in Earth. He is the SICK, and He is the WHOLENESS. He who said, “I THIRST,” is Himself THE LIVING WATER that promises we will never thirst again. Just as the disciples in the Emmaus house recognized their Lord through the broken bread and shared cup, So now, may our blindness turn to sight in Holy Communion, And we see Him for who He truly is! Let’s turn now in our Bibles to 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (NLT) where it reads….“23 For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread 24 and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.” 25 In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this to remember me as often as you drink it.” 26 For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again”. Communion offers us a special opportunity to “remember” the sacrifices of Jesus at the time of his passion and death as well as to reflect on the many examples of love and mercy which he gave us throughout his life and ministry on earth. Why do we do this? We “remember” so that we might follow in the footsteps of the Master, a path which will require much commitment and the development of character of our soul; a path for which we will need to refresh our hearts and minds on a regular basis in order to continue in our daily resolve to become those who are known by their Fruit. Communion involves belief in that we reflect on the past, on what occurred in the life of Jesus some 2000 years ago. Yet, as we “remember” we are also reminded of what is possible for our souls to achieve by the grace of God. Now let us look at becoming Christ-like It is likely that all of us struggle from time to time with “old knee jerk” reactions left over from our habits of the flesh-nature. Due to the limitations of our “old nature” we may not be able to consistently forgive; we may find it hard to demonstrate fruit of the Spirit or hold to mercy in the face of difficulties or painful events. But via the new nature or by the Spirit we can forgive and we can become vessels for spiritual fruit, which is why we need the Spirit and why the examples which Jesus left us are so important to “remember” and to draw from frequently and as often as needed. So in moving closer to the goal of becoming “Christ-like,”… we also remind ourselves during Communion, that we have been given the gift of the Holy Ghost and grace, which is the seed of His Spirit bringing the resurrection power, to lift us, to enable us, and to carry us where we cannot go without that help. We ask the Spirit at communion time, not only to “discern” our hearts and motives, but to also show us where we might need to come up higher in our love walk. After we are clear and responsive to what “chastening” or encouragement that there is to receive from the Holy Spirit working within us, we move on to partake of the Bread, representing mercy and representing all of us in the Body who are to be the Bread of Mercy. Then, we take of the juice, representing the blood of Christ and the Spirit within us by which we can transform. All of this is done in celebration of our new and wonderful covenant. Let’s turn now in our Bibles again to 1 Corinthians 11:32 (NLT) where it reads “32 Yet when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned along with the world.” In this Scripture we see that whenever we submit to being examined or “judged” by the Spirit, by the Christ in us or “by the Lord” as the verse states, we are then open and able to be corrected and redirected, especially if we have become side-tracked or distracted from a focus on the Spirit. As our soul identifies more and more with the Spirit of Christ…or… as “the two become one,” that is… the soul and the Spirit, we find ourselves living more and more by the leading of the Holy Spirit. Now let us turn to Proverbs 3:11-13 (NLT) reads “My child, don’t reject the Lord’s discipline, and don’t be upset when He corrects you. For the Lord corrects those He loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights. Joyful is the person who finds wisdom, the one who gains understanding”. Now let us focus upon remembrance at communion time…. Let’s turn now in our Bibles to John 14:26 (NLT) “But when the Father sends the Advocate as My representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—He will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.” With our souls, our minds and our hearts… we experience this “remembrance” at communion time…of Jesus and of his many shining examples of love in action but especially of his many commandments to us to “also do” as he has shown us, such as: Let’s turn now to Matthew 22:37-40 (NLT) reads “Jesus replied, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: “love your neighbor as yourself”. The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” With the help of the “Gift of the Holy Ghost,” which is the “Holy Spirit” within us, we lean into that Spirit that we might “have ears ….and hear” what “the Spirit says to us,” now at the time of our communion and always, as we continue to walk with the Spirit everywhere we go. Let’s turn now to Revelations 2:17 (NLT) “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what He is saying to the churches. To everyone who is victorious I will give some of the manna that has been hidden away in Heaven. And I will give to each one a white stone, and on the stone will be engraved a new name that no one understands except the one who receives it.” So now before approaching the Lords Table we should do so with a clean heart…. Turning back to 1 Corinthians 11:27-30 “ 27 So anyone who eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily is guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup. 29 For if you eat the bread or drink the cup without honoring the body of Christ, you are eating and drinking God’s judgment upon yourself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and sick and some have even died”. So, prior to approaching the Lord’s Table, we seek the Spirit to “discern” our hearts and motives and ask, that any remaining “tare,” (false wheat or hindering element), be brought to our attention for healing and cleansing, especially with reference to the need to forgive or apply mercy somewhere in our lives. This is done, so that we might “take communion” with a clean heart, as it is possible to come to the table in an unworthy condition by taking communion before clearing one’s heart of un-forgiveness. Yet, since “learning how to forgive” is one of the reasons why we come to the Table in the first place, let us take the first step now in preparing for communion by simply pausing to ask the Holy Spirit, to bring to our attention any areas of our love walk where we might need to come up higher; we also ask to be shown by God, any areas of un-forgiveness which we might be holding. “Releasing” in love as we are released... In just a moment now we will play a song and allow ourselves a moment for personal reflection. As the music plays if a name or face comes to mind for any of us during this part of our ceremony, we can ask help from God to “move the mountain” from our hearts. We can also pray and “stand in the gap” for those who we know are challenged and pray that they might find peace. We may also pray for any areas in our own lives that we need His help with so that we may seek His cleansing to purify our hearts and minds. And as we pray for these needs, we can be released from the burden of the pain of the “fiery darts” which may have in any way affected us. -----INSERT MUSIC SELECTION HERE------ Suggestions….. Grace Greater Than Our Sin Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior Whiter Than Snow Now let us celebrate forgiveness and mercy with Scripture... Now let us turn to Matthew 5: 43-48 (NLT) reads “Teaching about Love for Enemies” 43 “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. 44 But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! 45 In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and He sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. 46 If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. 47 If you are kind only to your friends how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. 48 But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect”. And now let’s turn to Matthew 9:12-13 (NLT) reads 12 When Jesus heard this, he said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.” 13 Then he added, “Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” Let’s turn now to Mark 11:25-26 (NLT) reads “25 But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.” Let’s turn now to Proverbs 16:6 (NLT) reads “6 Unfailing love and faithfulness make atonement for sin. By fearing the LORD, people avoid evil”. Let’s now turn to Psalms 23:6 (NLT) reads “Surely Your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.” Our Focus now moves to The Last Supper... With our hearts aligned with the Holy Spirit, flowing in mercy, meekness and humility, we continue our celebration of communion by reading from the accounts of the Last Supper: Let’s turn now to Matthew 26: 26-30 (NLT) reads “26 As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.”27 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, 28 for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many. 29 Mark my words—I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Father’s Kingdom.”30 Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives”. Let’s now turn to Mark 14: 22-26 (NLT) reads “22 As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take it, for this is my body.”23 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And he said to them, “This is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice for many. 25 I tell you the truth, I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.”26 Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives”. Now let’s turn to Luke 22: 14-20 (NLT) reads “14 When the time came, Jesus and the apostles sat down together at the table 15 Jesus said, “I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins. 16 For I tell you now that I won’t eat this meal again until its meaning is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.”17 Then he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. Then he said, “Take this and share it among yourselves. 18 For I will not drink wine again until the Kingdom of God has come.”19 He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.”20 After supper he took another cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.” And last but not least; then we see the account in 1 Corinthians 11: 23–25 (NLT) this is when Paul by the Holy Ghost, spoke of the Last Supper saying: “23 For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. Do this to remember me as often as you drink it.” Now we will prepare for the sharing of the bread and the juice)... In a few moments now, as the music plays we will share the Bread and the Juice as we continue “In remembrance” of the life full of peace and mercy which Jesus has for us, but first let us reflect on the words of Paul…. Please turn to 1 Corinthians 10:15-17 (NLT) reads 15 You are reasonable people. Decide for yourselves if what I am saying is true. 16 When we bless the cup at the Lord’s Table, aren’t we sharing in the blood of Christ? And when we break the bread, aren’t we sharing in the body of Christ? 17 And though we are many, we all eat from one loaf of bread, showing that we are one body. As we eat the bread we “remember,” that we are to be the Bread of Mercy everywhere we go, as we represent Jesus. And as we drink the juice, we “remember” the blood of Jesus Christ which was shed for us and our New Covenant which brings us the power to change and grow by the Spirit of God; that we might become the people of God which He has in mind and that we might fulfill the calling and purpose of our souls in this life. Communion Prayer: Heavenly Father, we pray that You would bless this bread and juice now as the tokens of our communion. We pray that You would open our eyes that we may see and open our ears that we may always hear You Lord. Help us to always remember Your eternal love for us and help us to always strive to keep the covenants that we have made with You. Heavenly Father we ask You now to bless this bread that as we eat it we always remember the body of Your Son Jesus Christ who was beaten and broken for us. Help us to always remember that we took His name upon us when we accepted Him as our Savior. Help us to be living examples of Him to everyone we meet throughout all of our life. Heavenly Father we ask you now to bless this juice that as we drink it that we might always remember the blood of Your Son Jesus Christ which was shed for the remission of our sins. Father help us to always remember the great sacrifice of Your Son Jesus Christ and to repent always whenever we stray from the paths of righteousness that You would have us to walk. Father help us to always have our hearts and minds right and clear with You as we share in this Holy Communion. We ask these things in the mighty and matchless name of Your Son Jesus Christ.
