Paula Priesse August 30th – The great American philosopher, Larry the Cable Guy, once said: “You can’t fix stupid.” The labor participation rate is now at a 34-year low. And this from McClatchy yesterday: “Teen employment hits record lows, suggesting lost generation.” So naturally some fast-food workers went on strike Thursday demanding $15/hour. Many said their earnings couldn’t support a family. But since when did asking, “You want fries with that?” become a fulltime career? If the strikers expect to fully support their families by flipping burgers all their lives the problem isn’t with McDonald’s. And if the pay is unsatisfactory, no worries, others may soon take their place. Like the robot that can crank out 360 gourmet burgers per hour. Or the touch-screen kiosks that act as cashiers. At least with them you won’t get that blank stare after handing over 22 bucks on a $6.65 tab. We end by returning to the words of Larry the Cable Guy: “All the uptight, politically correct types they don’t like WalMart. ‘They don’t pay good wages.’ I’ve got an idea, don’t work at frickin’ WalMart.” Larry for President 2016!
