People born in May can count their lucky stars By Auslan Cramb, Scottish Correspondent People born in May are more likely to think themselves lucky in life, according to a study published today. Following an experiment Prof Richard Wiseman has concluded that there is a direct link between the time of year people are born and how lucky they feel. Those born in the summer months tend to have a more positive outlook and consider themselves lucky, which leads to greater success in life. Those born in the dark winter months face a harder time and tend more towards a gloomy Victor Meldrew outlook. After the short experiment at the Edinburgh International Science Festival involving 40,000 people, Prof Wiseman, a psychologist based at the University of Hertfordshire, concluded that May was the luckiest month, and October the unluckiest. Celebrities born in May include David Beckham, Tony Blair and Jonny Wilkinson, the England rugby player. Other lucky summer birthday celebrities include: Michael Howard, Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor, George W Bush, J K Rowling, Sir Sean Connery and Tom Cruise. Those less lucky, with birthdays between September and February, include: Charles Kennedy, Sir Alex Ferguson, the Prince of Wales, Ally McCoist, the former footballer, and Vanessa Feltz, the television presenter. The bottom line is that people who are born in the summer consider themselves luckier than those born in the winter months, said Prof Wiseman. It is quite a significant finding and there is some good evidence that people born in the summer are a bit more optimistic and resilient. It could be to do with the effects of temperature on birth or parental styles. For instance, parents may be more optimistic and happy in the summer, which may rub off on the child. The effect might be due to changes in how some parents interact with their babies during summer and winter, but we wont know for certain until we have conducted additional research. The experiment, based on peoples perceptions of themselves, was launched this month at the start of the festival and more than 40,000 visitors have since completed an internet questionnaire. Prof Wiseman added: Lucky people are more outgoing, optimistic and resilient, they trust their instincts and are quite spontaneous. Things tend to work out for them and they are usually very successful. It would be wrong to think we did have control over every aspect of our lives but equally my research indicates we might have more control in certain areas than some people imagine. The good news for winter-borns is that people can improve their luck by being more optimistic and making the most of the opportunities that come their way.
