Peshawar: morning disbelief Its hard to wrap your mind around a tragedy of the magnitude of the shootings yesterday at the Pakistani school in Peshawar. The Taliban attack left 141 victims dead, 132 of them children. The Taliban says they attacked the school because it taught the children of soldiers, who wanted to follow in their fathers footsteps. One assumes that if youre a religious zealot, that kind of thinking makes sense. To anyone with even a morsel of compassion, however, the cowardly murder of children in the name of religion has only one name: abomination. The Taliban does not have an exclusive franchise on the murder of children, of course. The battles of the biblical ancients left no one alive; the Mongolian hordes killed everyone; the Romans laid waste to entire cities; and we, you will recall, first starved Iraqi children with years of embargoes, then destroyed those who survived with a gleeful Shock and Awe attack, cheered on as surgical strikes by the George Bush war criminals. And make no mistake--the Iraq war was religious, justified by the lies told by Bush and Cheney, and believed by the gullible in the panic after 9/11. But how can anyone make sense of a RELIGIOUS WAR? Any God worthy of a religion would recoil in horror at the concept. Faced with yesterdays atrocity in Peshawar what would Jesus do? Or Mohammed? Or the Buddha?--mamie van doren
