Pillayar Kovil on Warren Road( Chennai in a Capsule) This is not a big landmark in Chennai but it is synonymous with my childhood and growing up in good old Mylapore,Chennai. The Pillayar Kovil on Warren road, has a week long festival leading to Ganesh Chaturthi where leading classical artists perform, the temple deity is decorated and above all festivity is literally in the air. Growing up, this was an event we used to look forward to, as late night parties had a new meaning then. It meant listening to kurai onrum illai with close friends, and look forward to the next “thukda”. There were no curfews and coming back home at 11 in the night after a long kutcheri gave you such a high. Music truly is an elixir of life and this festival ensured we got our fair share every day. Not to forget the temple priest who decorated the deity ( Ganesha) in different avatars and the friends we made for life , who were an integral part of our growing up years in this same locality. When you say Chennai most people’s mind conjure up an image of classical music and dance interspersed with traditionally dressed people in grand old temples . I am not surprised, as I did not have to think too much to write this piece. I can vividly recollect the fervor and grandeur in this small temple in my local neighborhood that had stalwarts in classical music performing for the sheer joy of the rasikas. The tradition still continues and thankfully I am still here to visit this temple and reminisce about my childhood. Tradition and values need to be imbibed and mine sure was thanks to the pillayar kovil on warren road. #MadrasWeek #Madras374
