Pittsburgh United: Action on Wed, Oct 30 at 11 am at the US Steel Tower downtown Pittsburgh, PA This past spring 130 transcriptionists jobs were outsourced by UPMC to a company called Nuance. Many had been loyal employees of UPMC for decades, earning family sustaining wages with affordable healthcare. In order to save a few dollars, UPMC turned good jobs into jobs that pay poverty wages with unaffordable health care. And they engineered things to try to prevent transcriptionists from collecting unemployment insurance -- to make sure transcriptionists would take jobs at Nuance so UPMC would get skilled transcription at a bargain price. This week former UPMC transcriptionists received their first paychecks from Nuance. The decline in transcriptionists standard of living could not be more dramatic, or outrageous. In Cindy Cromies case, Nuance had to add $26.85 to her pay just to hit the minimum wage mark. Thats why Cindy just moved back in with her mother and why, at age 56, she sleeps and works in her childhood bedroom. UPMC executives likely thought that a group of women whove worked from home for decades would just go away silently. They were wrong. Transcriptionists from all over western and central PA have decided they wont be treated unfairly and they want people to know the real impact of UPMCs decision. Transcriptionists and their families and supporters will be holding a press conference next Wed, Oct 30 at 11 am at the US Steel Tower downtown. Theyre going to show all of Pittsburgh how our largest charity does business and how this impacts families in our community. Can they count on you to join them?
