Police have commenced an investigation into a fire at a boarding house at Concord this evening. Shortly before 6pm today (Wednesday 16 July 2014), emergency services were called to a boarding house on Parramatta Road near the intersection of Burwood Road. Numerous emergency services responded as it was initially believed a number of residents were unaccounted for. Fire and Rescue NSW were able to locate and extinguish the fire however a large part of the three floors of the premises were smoke affected. In all 28 rooms were searched and all residents were accounted for. However, two people were treated at the scene by Ambulance Paramedics and conveyed to Concord Hospital. One man suffered minor burns to his hands while a second man suffered smoke inhalation. Several people have been relocated from the boarding house and emergency housing has been organised for those affected. Traffic on Parramatta Road was delayed as emergency services ensured the premises were safe. Shortly before 8pm eastbound traffic was able to resume limited access past the premises on Parramatta Road. Police from Burwood Local Area Command have commenced an investigation into the cause of the fire which may have been started by an unattended cigarette. Investigations into the matter continue.
