Police investigate fatal pedestrian accident KAUMAKANI - Police continue to investigate a traffic accident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian and closed Kaumualii Highway for approximately five hours last night. Police dispatch received a call at 9:33 p.m. Saturday, reporting that a pedestrian had been struck on Kaumualii Highway just east of the Kaumakani Post Office by an eastbound vehicle. While responding to the scene, an officer in a police vehicle traveling eastbound apparently struck the victim a second time. The victim was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported. Police closed the highway at 9:45 p.m. The highway was re-opened at approximately 4:00 a.m. when police concluded their on-scene investigation. The victim’s identity has not yet been confirmed. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning. The officer involved in the incident has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation, per departmental protocol.
