Portia Nelson, in her poem Autobiography in Five Short Chapters - TopicsExpress

Portia Nelson, in her poem Autobiography in Five Short Chapters uses the metaphor of encountering a deep hole in a sidewalk while walking down a street to explain how she has made certain choices in life. In chapter one, she walksdown the street and falls in. She walks down the same street in chapter two, pretends she doesnt see the hole, and falls in again. In chapter three, she walks down this street, sees the hole, yet falls in by habit. Walking down the same street in chapter four, she then walks around the hole. In chapter five, she walks down another street. Nelson succinetly describes what their calls human revolution, the process whereby we uncover our inner wisdom. When we find ourselves encountering a problem, we may start to undestand it, but stay in denial for a while. Then we recognize our habitual pattern, or karma, ln making certain choices but still are not free from it. We may then take a step back and avoid making the same choice. And finally, we revolutionize the way we do things altogether.
