Poverty One of the many bylanes of Kumartuli in North Calcutta, where on both sides of the lane one will find artisans making idols in their studios that are worshiped feverently all across the world - especially with the Indian diaspora across the globe, idols from Kumartuli are parcelled off to their newfound homeland. In Calcutta, Durga Puja is one of the most celebrated festive occasion for its large Bengali populace and also for people from all other walks of life. On the months preceeding the festivity Kumartuli artisans are the busiest, making thousands of idols which are gotten rid off after the few days of celebration by immersing them into the river Hoogly. Seen here is another unique mode of transportation in Calcutta, that of the handpulled rickshaw - which is facing a ban as the West Bengal government finds its operation inhuman and exploitative. Majority of these rickshpullers are migrants from the neighbouring state of Bihar, whose only source of livelihood is now overshadowed by the imminent ban.
