Praying Without Doing: I remember as a young boy being remonstrated by my Mother after I had asked God to deal with a fellow who had hit me in the back of the head with a rock. My prayer was something in the order of Please God strike Graham dead for hitting me when my back was turned. I was 8 at the time. My Mother waiting patiently until we had finished our Bible reading and prayer time and asked me why I thought that God would answer my prayer and strike my hapless assaulter dead. I said that I thought that God answers the prayer of a righteous man. I had heard the verse that references the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man and assumed the innocent victim and righteous were one and the same. Rather than spend time on the esoteric theological argument, Mum went right for the issue of God helps those who help themselves and let me know that I wasnt a cripple and in this case I should deal with it myself. Cowards wait until your back is turned according to Mum and I was dispatched to face my attacker and do what my Dad had taught me to do, box his ears off. Scottish expressions are often oddities of the English language but I knew what she meant. If you read my book The Pink Pagoda, you will run across the account of my sticking up for my friend Sinclair Watson who had been afflicted with Cerebra Palsy and was picked on by a group of boys who were calling him retard on the playground at school. My Dad had been teaching me to box since I was really young and was quite surprised by my early abilities and especially my aggression once I got going (he blamed that on my Mother). So it was not at all out of character for me to stand up to someone who got physical with my friend or with me personally. Backing down was a French thing in my families parlance. The Bundy Ranch incident brought to mind Mums do something yourself philosophy and after I had prayed with Bailey, one of the Bundy daughters, while we chatted on the JJ McCartney radio show, I got my thinking cap on and made a decision. This incident was about government fire power being used to scare a family into acquiescing to an un-Constitutional action and violation of the rights of the individual. I decided to contact a fellow that I had met after I had spoken at an event last year. He was the worlds record sniper shooter and rather famous. He had shaken my hand and thanked me for my support of folks in the services and said that if he could ever do anything for me just to ask. I had his number, I called, he liked his assignment and to make this rather long story short, the government backed down at the Bundy Ranch. Another old expression is put your money where your mouth is. Mum would have been proud. - Dr. Jim Garrow -
