Pre Flight Check List Small Single Engine A/C UN-REGULATED AIRSPACE Get hot cup of coffee ! Approach A/C and open all compartments.. This allows critters to escape during the next phase. Shake rattle bang and listen for nuts bolts etc. that may bounce around in the belly of the A/C... Oh and watch as critters scamper or fly off ! Finish first cup of Coffee! Check Fuel in tanks Visually and drain the water out of them. Is your fuel the right color? Check all control surfaces for ease of movement. Listen and shakem. Check your engine, OIL and etceteras Check that prop for pits dings and cracks. Cooling ducts , you never know what has been blown in or moved in there. Close all appropriate covers and panels. Un-cover Pitot tube and see if any spiders have made a home there. Take wiz... From the coffee. Un do all Tie downs an or remove wheel chocks Find Log Book and or Preflight Checklist. Read it allowed as you do your Cockpit check. Some folks might think you are crazy BUTTT verbalizing helps to get your ass in the right frame of mind. You are after all a wingless humanoid getting ready to fly in a mechanical device. Set trim to appropriate mark or condition Check Fuel in off position Battery switch on, check busses/ breakers. No smoke smelled or visible.. Good Turn on lights Nav, Panel rotating beacon etc. Fuel Lever to on position. Set Magneto selector to BOTH YELL CLEAR, LOUDLY Turn the key, If your engine starts thats good. Now that the A/C is vibrating a bit, Turn on your Gyroscopic Instruments and watch your Magnetic Compass twist and twirl, until it settles down. Still no smoke or visible flames, this is good. Adjust you Altimeter to the nearest Barometric source. If you are returning to this same spot within an hour or so. JUST zero it. At that known Field Elevation. By now the engine should be good and warm and all instruments reading in the green. Radio on and announce where you are and that you are taking off from where you are! Maybe no one is there or anywhere around.. BUTTT you never know if someone might land right on top of you during your long awaited takeoff.! Fasten seat belts of other restraints, and adjust package. Look around and remember everything you think you know about flying. Ok line up on that tree that you use for reference. Set the Flaps .Brakes on. Magneto Left / Right check at T/O RPM Back to Both. Throttle down to 10% or until RPM is in the green then release the BRAKE throttle up. Check them peddles and other controls as the A/C begins to move. If you notice anything weird Abort take off. If not, Watch you IAS or V/Speed and let that puppy lift off as you now begin to set your trim. Ok about 75/ 80 KTS IAS adjust your flaps as needed. BREATH AHH! And increase throttle to maintain proper air speed. Now as you clear the last visual obstruction, Think to your self how wonderful flying really is. Happy landings ! In case I forgot something. Im glad Im not actually flying today! BUTTT theres always Tomorrow Tomorrow its only a Day Away.
