Preach It! 9-10-13 Topic: “What Are You Looking For?” Scripture: Proverbs 18:22 New King James Version (NKJV) 22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor from the Lord. Ladies, you can apply this where you may, but in honor of my wife Gloria’s birthday today, this one is for the fellas. It’s a simple question: “What are you looking for?” In your life, your career, your finances? All of these things are greatly impacted by your choice of a wife. If you are superficial, then pretty arm candy with no prayer life or full support of your vision for your life or family just might do for you. Perhaps you want a super intelligent woman; steeped in language, academia -the prim and proper socialite; but are YOU smart enough or secure enough for her? I know, I know, in these tough economic times, you want a woman with money and lots of it, or at least one who makes her own money so she won’t need any of yours. What happens when she can’t work though? Will your eyes stray to greener pastures and larger bank accounts? The Bible tells us as men, we can obtain favor from the Lord for finding a wife. It goes beyond just picking any female and putting a “ring on it”, though. The Bible goes beyond this and lays out a clear set of qualities you should seek out when you are looking to find a wife: Is she virtuous? Can you trust her? Will she do you good and not evil all the days of her life? Is she a good planner and manager? Does she take care of herself and her household? Is she skilled in a particular gift, trade or craft? Is she wise and kind? Does she avoid idleness, gossip and strife? Most of all, does she fear the Lord? (See Proverbs 31:10-31) I don’t mean to brag, and even though Gloria is not perfect in every single way, she ticks off most of these boxes. She has been a blessing to my life for nearly 46 years of marriage. She prays over me and for me. I can trust her with my heart, my life, and my money. She has reared 3 God-fearing, multi-talented children and pronounced blessings upon their lives and that of our grandchildren. Besides that, she is absolutely gorgeous. How can this be? Well, I sought God in my searching and I found a gem. Take my advice, do a little research, and wherever you can, get a good look at the mother or significant female figure in the life of the woman you’re interested in. That will tell you a lot. I looked at Gloria’s mother and saw an angel- a God-fearing woman who supported her husband in ministry, sickness, even unto death. So I’ll ask you again, “What are you looking for?” Hopefully she is a good thing! Be Blessed!
