President Kenyatta attends summit on DRC crisis TUESDAY, NOV 5, 2013 -l BY PSCU President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday night joined seven other Heads of State and Government in Pretoria, South Africa for a joint Summit over the conflict in DR Congo. The Joint Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) Summit at OR Tambo centre was co-chaired by President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and Dr. Joyce Banda of Malawi and analyzed among other things, the implementation of the Framework Agreement for peace, stability and cooperation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and Dr. Joyce Banda of Malawi, who are chairpersons to ICGLR and SADC respectively, urged both the DR Congo Government and M 23 rebels to give peace a change. “DR Congo Government and the M23 rebels should go back to the negotiating table for the sake of peace and stability on the country,” said the leaders. President Museveni asked the parties to the dispute to exercise constraint and tolerance as they go back to the negotiating table. He said persistent conflicts denied people a chance to exploit the national economic potential and that the conflict required military, political and diplomatic interventions to resolve. The host, South African President Jacob Zuma asked leaders of the member states of ICGLR and SAADC to work together in ensuring the instruments for regional cooperation are fully implemented. He also said balanced and equitable regional integration was only possible in a peaceful and stable environment. The Summit was also attended by Presidents Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Hifikepunye Pohamba of Namibia, Prime Minister of Lesotho Tom Thabane, President Joseph Kabila of DR Congo and Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania and delegations from ten other member states of ICGLR AND SADC. The emergency meeting took place amidst renewed fighting between DRC Government allied troops and M23 rebels in the east of the country, barely hours after the movement declared a unilateral ceasefire to facilitate a return to peace talks in Uganda.
