As part of the on-going management of historic areas, Durham County Council has produced draft character appraisals for Annfield Plain, Chester-le-Street, Crook, Gainford and Sherburn House conservation areas. The appraisals, detailing proposed management changes and boundary changes to the conservation areas, are now available online at durham.gov.uk/conservationareas The appraisals for each area will also be on display at drop in sessions where local residents, property owners and businesses in the area can view and comment on them. Council staff will be on hand at all of the drop in sessions to discuss the plans, record any comments that the public may have and answer questions about the particular conservation area. The drop in sessions will take place as follows: • Crook Civic Centre – Monday June 10, 2:30pm to 6:30pm • Gainford Village Hall – Wednesday June 12, 2:30pm to 6:30pm • Cornerstones, Chester le Street – Wednesday June 19, 2:30pm to 6:30pm • Sherburn Village Community Centre – Wednesday June 26, 2:30pm to 6:30pm • Annfield Plain Library – Monday July 1, 4:15pm to 6:30pm Sandra Robertson, heritage landscape and design manager, said: “The purpose of character appraisals is to make sure that the unique characteristics and historic features of our conservation areas are understood, whilst ensuring that they meet the needs of modern communities. We hope local residents and businesses will help us build a detailed picture of what is special about the area they live and work in by taking part in the consultation events” The public consultation period on the appraisals lasts until Friday July 12 and, if supported, the documents and boundary changes will then go to Cabinet in October for final approval.
