Press Release The Day Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Relocated to Delta State Delta and Akwa-Ibom State Houses of Assembly on Thursday 13th June, 2013, in a joint-sitting tackled critical issues bordering on the transformational agenda of the people of the South-South region. The two Houses of Assembly through motions raised five critical development issues, urging President Goodluck Jonathan to step up action on the development projects in the region. The Speaker of Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly Rt Hon. Samuel Ikon described the joint session of Legislators from the Delta State House of Assembly and their Akwa Ibom colleagues as a veritable platform to enhance regional cooperation among lawmakers of the South South states. Elder Samuel Ikon noted that the joint session of both Houses of Assembly was aimed at deepening democracy and fostering a harmonious relationship between both states, adding that such meetings were necessary to sustain the corporate existence of the country. In a joint sitting held at the Legislative Chamber of the Delta State House of Assembly, the Delta State and Akwa Ibom State Houses of Assembly in the Joint Sitting commended His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCFR), President and Commander – in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for the declaration of a State of Emergency in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe State and for the proscription of Jamaatu Ahlis-Sunna Liddawati Wal Jihad, otherwise known as Boko Haram and Ansaru Islamic fundamentalist sects. THE DEPUTY SPEAKER (DELTA STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY) RT.. HON. (BARR.) BASIL O. GANA GANA who moved the motion urged that His Excellency, the President should not rest in his oars until he actualizes the provisions of Section 14 (2)(b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) The resolutions of both Houses which followed motions moved by the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon Johnson Erijo (Delta), Deputy Speaker, Hon Kierian Akpan (Akwa-Ibom) and seconded by Hon Ime Ikon (Akwa-Ibom) and Hon Tim Owhefere (Delta), also urged President Goodluck Jonathan to direct the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to ensure that work commences on the proposed Coastal Road Project from Calabar to Lagos. The special sitting presided by the Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Victor Ochei and his Akwa-Ibom State counterpart, Rt. Hon. Samuel Ikon equally urged the President to use his good offices to prevail on oil exploration and exploitation companies operating in the South-South region, including the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to partner the relevant MDAs in the construction of the Coastal Road. The lawmakers also urged the President to direct all relevant government agencies to remit to NDDC outstanding funds to enable it fully implement the Niger Delta Development Master Plan as well as prevail on the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to expedite action for the speedy completion of the East –West road so as to avert loss of lives and valuable time. Both Houses urged President Jonathan to direct the Federal Ministry of Transport; Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs; NDDC and other relevant government agencies to immediately commence the construction of railway line linking the South-South region to Lagos State and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. "That this Joint sitting of the Delta State and Akwa Ibom State houses of Assembly hereby urges His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCFR), the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to; (i) Direct the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and Niger Delta Development commission (NDDC) to ensure that work commences on the proposed Coastal road Project from Calabar to Lagos and to use his good offices to urge all oil exploration and exploitation companies operating in the South –South region including the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and other stakeholders in the oil industry to as well partner with the above mentioned MDAs for the construction of the Coastal Road Project which will serve as a catalyst for both regional integration and enhance economic activities in the South- south region. (ii) Direct all relevant Government Agencies to remit to the Niger Development Commission to enable her fully implement the Niger Delta Development Master Plan. (iii) As a matter of urgency direct the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to the expedite action for the speedy completion of the East-West road so as to avert loss of lives and valuable time." Leading the debate on the coastal road construction, the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon Johnson Erijo (Delta) including Hon Ime Okon (Akwa-Ibom), Hon Samuel Mariere (Delta), Hon Kufre Etuk (Akwa-Ibom), said the construction of the Coastal road project would serve as a catalyst for both regional integration and enhanced economic activities in the South-South region. The Deputy Speaker, Hon Kierian Akpan (Akwa-Ibom) who led debate on the motion alongside Hon Tim Owhefere (Delta), Hon Edwin Joseph (Akwa-Ibom), and Hon (Mrs.) Pat Ajudua (Delta) for the construction of railway line, said it remained the easiest and cheapest form of transportation that is commonly used in advanced countries, saying the Federal Government should expedite action to boost economic activities of the people of the region that produces the major resources for the development of the country. The Leader of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Okpolopm Ette and the Member Representing Nsit Ubium State Constituency, Hon. Barr. Onofiok Luke lead the discussion on the giant developmental strides recorded by the two states. The two houses of Assembly commended His Excellency, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan (CON) and His Excellency, Chief (Dr.) Godswill Obot Akpabio (CON), Governors of Delta and Akwa-Ibom States respectively for the uncommon transformation and developmental strides which has engendered relative peace and security in Delta And Akwa-Ibom States of Nigeria.
