Press release from East Peak Fire Public Information Officer Firefighters continue to construct and tie in existing lines around the fire perimeter while structure protection remains a priority. The south/southwest portion of the fire is heavily timbered and has potential for active fire behavior this afternoon. Resources continue to be ordered and are arriving daily. Fire weather conditions are expected to increase fire activity in the afternoon. The relative humidity is forecasted to be between 5-10 % with winds blowing in a west to southwest direction. Based on the weather forecast today expect similar fire activity as yesterday. A red flag warning has been issued from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. There are an estimated 300 properties within the evacuation area. An American Red Cross shelter has been established at the John Mall High School in Walsenburg, Colorado. Evacuated animals, large or small can be taken to the Fairgrounds in La Veta, Colorado. Firefighters continue to fight the fire aggressively while providing for public and firefighter safety first. Marc Haines, Safety Officer for Rocky Mountain Team C, stated at this morning’s operational briefing, “I would like to thank the initial attack crews and the Type III organization for their exceptional safety record.” Information about this and other fires can be found at inciweb.org.
