Pretty rare these days to encounter a top-end restaurant that doesn’t have a vegetarian main course on its menu, as happened last night. Furthermore, the “vegetarian options available” footnote was deceptively reassuring. These consisted of offering to take the meat out of the meat dishes. I wanted to say, “That’s not a vegetarian dish. That’s a meal you broke so technically I *could* eat it - but why would I want to? I’m not paying you a fortune simply to refuel. I want the same standard of cuisine my friends are enjoying.” I got something worth eating in the end, but it was a fight. It shouldn’t be. Sigh.
