Previously on D-Siders… Cebisa told Peter that she’d organise a meeting with her siblings. Bonani was having an awesome time that afternoon. His house was packed with all of his siblings, and the place smelled of real food, for a change. Cebisa has treated them to a nice lunch/supper. She and Asanda had prepared potato and bean salad, with pap and gravy. They were in the kitchen bonding like long lost sisters – laughing and clowning. Bonani and Thabo were outside braaing wors, lamb chops and beef. Everyone was in a good mood, even Thabo’s dog; Princess. The music was on loud and there was an obvious sense of unity and love amongst them. Thabo had even stated earlier that their mom would’ve been proud to see this. “Mom is smiling down, happy for us right now,” he uttered. Bonani was ecstatic. They’d be left with food for at least another four days. Cebisa had really pulled through this time. The girls were done in the kitchen. They joined the boys outside. Thabo and Bonani had already started nibbling on pieces of boerewors. To console the girls, Bonani opened the dish filled with meat and offer them too. “You thieves,” Cebisa accused. “I hope you aren’t full already. We’ve got salads and pap for days inside.” “We just had one piece Cebz,” Thabo lied, smiling. “It’s true, it was only one,” Bonani reiterated, on the verge of a giggle. They stood there, around the fire, chatting about anything and everything - just immersed in the realm of family unity. Asanda was as happy as a bird, chilling with her real family for a change. It felt like Christmas. “Okay guys, I have a bit of an announcement,” Cebisa said, holding a lamb chop with the tips of her fingers. “It’s kinda serious.” “And here we were thinking that you suddenly decided to spoil us, out of the blue,” Bonani joked. “So, what’s up Cebz?” They all turned to her. “I’m … engaged,” she confessed, squinting her eyes, waiting for the blows, kicks and knocks. “To who?” Thabo asked, developing a frown. “Good question Thabo,” Bonani added. “Guys, Peter proposed to me and I accepted.” There was an awkward silence. You could hear a pin drop. “Hey, congratulations sis Cebz,” Asanda said, smiling and hugging her older sister. “Tell me you’re joking Cebisa,” Bonani pleaded. “I’m not. I’m very serious.” “Cebisa when you had the whole Joseph driver’s license issue, you told me that you think Peter likes you, and you hinted that you might be considering it,” Bonani stressed. “You said nothing, absolutely nothing about a serious relationship that might lead to marriage.” “Yes I know it’s a shock, but …” “Wait let me finish Cebz. You do realise that you know absolutely nothing about this man? You don’t have a clue who he is. He’s got skeletons from here to Timbuktu. He’s a liar and a manipulator.” Bonani was rambling on, even struggling to catch his breath. “This is the same guy that appears in newspapers about how vile and deceitful he is. Are you kidding me, Cebz?” “Bonani I know all of …” “He’s a murderer, a liar, a cheat. I mean he fired me and left me out in the cold – your own brother. You’re marrying my enemy, Cebisa. You want to marry my enemy. Are you serious right now?” Thabo took the fork from Bonani. The meat on the grill was burning and unattended. “I hope this is all some sick joke, really,” Bonani said, grabbing the fork from his brother. Thabo also had to add in his two cents. “I’m with bra Bonani on this one, sis’Cebz. You can’t trust Peter. He’s proven over and over again that he’s a criminal.” “A dirty foul criminal with a dark past,” Bonani added, growing more and more upset. “The guy has policemen on his payroll, for crying out loud.” “Yes but you weren’t singing that tune when he took you in, Bonani,” Cebisa fought back. “You weren’t saying these things when he bought you food, clothed you, gave you a job, gave you shelter and money. You were grateful then, weren’t you?” her frustration was getting the better of her. “The mere reason why we’re here today having steak, lamb chops, salads and a car parked right outside your house is because of Peter.” “Yes but we found out that he was trying to buy his soul back, after what he did to the people in Swaziland,” Bonani replied. “He was only nice to us because he screwed hundreds of people in Swaziland, so he was trying to clear his conscience.” “That doesn’t matter. The reasons don’t matter. And you’re speculating, by the way. You don’t know for sure what his reasons were. Anyway, my point is he helped you Bonani, big time. He put thousands in your pocket and exposed you to a life you would’ve never known. But that’s not even the real issue here. Guys, Peter loves me, and I love him. I’m sure he’s probably got a few things that he’d rather forget in his past life, but don’t we all?” “No,” Bonani responded. His face looked as sour as a lemon. “We’ve never robbed and gotten people imprisoned in our past lives Cebisa. Let me clarify something: The cash and stuff that you speak off – it was blood money. He gave me blood money. He has a mansion and luxury cars because of other people’s pain and suffering. There’s nothing great or spectacular of Peter.” Asanda was as quiet as a church mouse. She didn’t want her sister with Peter, but she also didn’t like that Bonani seemed to be attacking Cebisa. She chose to exclude herself from the verbal battle. Thabo felt the exact same way – only he was ready to voice his opinion. “There’s nothing spectacular about a man that fed you and gave you a job, and gave you shelter, and educated you in business. You’re an arrogant little bastard, Bonani.” “Whoa! Hold up guys,” Thabo cut in. “What did you call me, Cebisa?” Bonani asked, fuming. “I called you an arrogant, ungrateful little bastard that can’t even be happy for his own sister’s success.” “You’re with Peter, Cebisa. That’s not success. That’s what I’m trying to tell you. You’ll always be in that man’s debt. You’ll have to cough up, sooner or later. And I don’t want you, my sister, to be in that position. Please don’t marry Peter. Marry anybody, but not him. I’m pleading with you. It’s a terrible idea, and I’m not gonna change my stance on this one.” Cebisa looked away, and to Asanda. “What do you think? You’re so quiet.” “I also don’t like Peter, sis’ Cebz. I think bra Bonani and Thabo are right. But I’m happy for you anyway.” Cebisa turned around and stormed off. “Where’re you going Cebisa,” Bonani yelled. “Voetsek, just leave me alone,” Cebisa shouted back, grabbing her bag and car keys from the kitchen. She’d had enough of them. She ran to her car and sped off. Enjoyed this episode? Then why not sharing it with your friends?! Jealousy! Good or bad?
