Probably dont know how stupid, careless, hurtful things you did in the past come back to haunt you even today. I now do. I was hot to sell yearbooks to cover our costs. I stupidly approved a sign saying something like Dont be a village idiot. Buy a yearbook. The Special ed. teacher, a woman that year, rightfully took me to task, bless her soul, for such an asinine statement: Dont you realize how hurtful these special ed. kids feel when theyve been denegraded in the past with a label like village idiot? How could you put something as insensitive and cruel as that on posters throughout the school? I pulled the posters down as quickly as I could, feeling like crawling under a rock where I belonged. Tonight I may look for that very same rock. Why the devil didnt I talk about this cruel stunt I inadvertently pulled on innocent students in my classes, particularly Ethics? Darn good question. Forgive me my cloddish behavior in the past. At 72, Im really sick of myself tonight.
