Probably the biggest ship ever to use Tarbert pier. This is the then-brand new Isle of Lewis approaching Tarbert for berthing trials from 12.25pm to 12.50pm on 27 July 1995, whilst on her delivery voyage from Port Glasgow to Stornoway. She called at Uig, Lochmaddy & Tarbert to carry out trials in case an emergency were ever to arise in the future. Thankfully, theres been no such emergency to attend to - which is just as well, because I would expect a riot to break out if the IOL were to serve on the triangle. Theres been enough bother in Harris recently with the Binwaggon, the Herochs unflattering nickname for the Finlaggan. These two pictures were taken by the late Jim Aikman Smith, and were given to me by CalMac historian Ian McCrorie, to help with a new book Im writing on the Isle of Lewis.
