Progress report on our new friend RJ. Was worried over weekend when I couldnt reach him. Went to find him as soon as I got off work this morning. Turns out his trac phone ran out of minutes. Took him to Walgreens, where the clerk was so sweet and helpful to find us the right card to recharge his minutes, with an UPB4 Son donation. Had technical problems adding them from card, but the service rep on the phone finally got it straightened out, and added an additional 200 minutes for our trouble! Learned more about his situation, and got permission from RJ to begin checking into all your offers of help/expertise in finding him a safe and clean place to live. His current residence is neither. He gets $726 a month from SSI and is paying over $500 for a rundown mousetrap of a joint. He is behind $100 on rent due to a friend stealing money from his wallet recently. I went in to pay some of it, but was told We only take cash! So that will have to wait until tomorrow. I will be in touch w those of you who have offered advice/contacts. Im trying to reach his caseworker first, to get the basics and coordinate what needs to be done. I left him alone in my car for 5 minutes while I ran into the office. When I came back, his eyes were wet with tears. He said Ive been praying while you were gone, thanking God for bringing those into my life who I need. He must have told me Thank you sir 5 different times. He said no one else has ever done this much for him. All weve really done is care, and try to clear his path a bit. Very humbling to realize it could so easily be you, or me.
