Prosecutor Gerrie Nel has asked for a day to consult with psychiatrist Dr Carla Kotze before he continues cross-examining Sports Medicine Professor Wayne Derman. Nel and Derman had a series of tense exchanges in the first part of the cross-examination, with Derman saying several times that he had not understood Nel’s line of questioning. Nel also made a point of questioning Derman’s objectivity, asking how unbiased the doctor was able to be considering that he had treated Pistorius and spent a considerable amount of time with the athlete. Kotze, who will consult with Nel today, was part of the panel that evaluated Pistorius’ mental state over 30 days at the Weskoppies Psychiatric hospital in Pretoria. She is also the panellist who the state selected to take part in the evaluation. During his evidence in chief, Derman testified that he believes that Pistoriuss disability made him vulnerable and that sounds coming from the bathroom had caused Pistorius to respond on the night that he shot and killed Reeva Steenkamp.
