Proverbs 29:2, When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan. Everyone likes to see the good guy win; I guess it is just human nature. Many times, but not all the time, the righteous seem to have to struggle against tough odds, people are against them, the wicked want to oppress them, they are called to take unrighteous shortcuts, and so forth. When we see the underdog win, it makes us feel like we can do that too. However, when the wicked are in power it seems their only concern is themselves and in ways they can strengthen their position, get more power, more money, more influence, and so forth. They do not mind stepping on the other people as they climb that ladder to the top. So naturally, people moan and groan when folks like that are in power. Maybe the simplest application here is to ask which group we are in, the righteous or the wicked. And before we answer that question, maybe we need to think about whether people rejoice or groan around us. We all know that the opinions of men are not the ultimate standard we are held to, but we do need to be mindful of the reputation we have. Do people see us a concerned for them and their situations or do they see us as focused only on our own agenda? Are they glad when we walk into the room or glad when we walk out? Again, this is not about simply pleasing people, but when we live our life as God directs, when we are righteous in his sight, people will notices that as well. Father, help me be the kind of person who makes others rejoice. In Jesus’ name, amen
