Public Relations Section HYDERABAD(PRESS RELEASE) Prof. Dr. Mujeebuddin Memon Sahrai, Vice Chancellor Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam, urges that all the major stakeholder in agriculture to come up and share their responsibility for country’s development and prosperity. He was addressing to a gathering at the Inauguration ceremony of Farmer Advisory Service Center (FASC) at the Faculty of Agricultural Social Sciences (FASS). In addition, he said that academia and scientists at Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) should disseminate the knowledge for the farmers and help them to cope the challenges they are facing at the field. He said that the foremost objective of Agriculture in Pakistan is to ensure adequate production and availability of food for the population and provide livelihoods to people directly involved in the sector along with the value adding chain and this objective can be achieved when all the stakeholders play their role in an effective manner. He further added that the small farmers could not benefit with the fruit of agriculture due to illiteracy. Further he emphasized the need to introduce the high yielding and drought resistance varieties to the farmers through the farmer advisory services. He added that research has been conducted but that research would not be actual research until farmer could apply that research in the field and get the benefit. He said that in the developed countries are being benefited from our scholar research but due to language barrier our farmer is not getting the desired information and urged that our scientists should come with the modern approach and will change their mindset in order to get the farmers aware of the modern techniques of production, marketing and the efficient use of quality seed and available resources through local language, so as to adoption technology at their field level. He added that Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam will produce manpower besides the SAU will identify the farmer problems and provide the solutions of the problems through agricultural knowledge to the farming community for their better livelihood. He assured that in future SAU will start FM radio services and will extend knowledge to the small farmers in the province. He appreciated the efforts of the Incharge Dean, FASS Dr. Zaheeruddin Mirani in establishing that center. Earlier, Dr. Zaheeruddin Mirani, Incharge Dean, FASS introduced the concept of Farmer Advisory Service Center. He said that SAU is the only Agriculture University in Sindh and is located at the heart of the Sindh Province. A wide range of expertise is available at SAU including Agriculture, Horticulture, Engineering, and Livestock and Poultry and this expertise can be utilized to help the Sector in achieving the desired results at Sindh Level. Social activist Miss Zahida Detho said that the role of rural women cannot be ignored in agriculture sector of Sindh and 70% of rural women are working with main from sowing, hoeing, inter- culturing and harvesting of the crops. She added that rural women of the province are working in livestock center, but due to our socio-economic cultures the role of women has been neglected and many issues are facing by the rural women’s in the province. Mr. Noor Muhammad Nizamani, Progressive Farmer and Chairman, Agriculture Forum Sindh said that there is more differentiate in class room teaching and field work. The fundamental of the research is to provide the technical support to the farmers, but farmers are still not benefited and the livelihood of the farmers from 67 years of the independent is still in same condition. He appreciated the SAU Vice Chancellor efforts for initiating the farmers’ activities at the campus. Prof. Muhammad Ismail Kumbhar, Coordinator of the Advisory Services briefed that this center will develop the strong linkages with the farming community and other public, private and NGOs sector for the betterment of the agriculture sector. On the occasion Prof. Abu Sajid Muhammad Samoo, Representative of the Agro-Based Companies, Mr. Tanveer Akram, Zeeshan Saleem Arain, Shahid Hussain Soomro, Rashid Mehmood Wandiar, Deepak Raj Goswami and others also spoke. The Deans of the Faculties at SAU, Academia, Farmers, Agro-based industries representatives, civil society actors and officials of various NGO’s were also present at the occasion.
