Published on Oct 15, 2013 Judge Murphy, 63, passed away on September 15, 2013. He is survived by his wife Lauren and daughters Lyba and Laurel. Originally form Marin County, Judge has been a San Francisco Bay Area singer, fronting the well-known jamband Zero. In recent years, Judge also sang with his wife Lauren in their band Landsdale Station¹. For many years, Zero was primarily an instrumental band. In 1990 Zero began collaborating with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter and Judge was recruited to sing. Hunter penned some of his best lyrics for the band and Judge delivered them with a rich, baritone, signature vocal style. Zero¹s best known album, Chance in a Million¹, (A&M, 1994); was Judge¹s debut Zero album. Bam magazine awarded a five-star review to only two albums: The Beatles¹ Sergeant Pepper¹s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Zero¹s ŒChance in a Million¹. As a an infant, Ross Murphy would sit in his high chair and bang his spoon like a gavel. He was nick-named The Judge¹. Judge chose the drums as his first instrument. He will be missed by fellow musicians and music fans throughout the country. Zero will be performing a memorial concert on October 25, 2013 at The Mystic Theater, Petaluma, Ca. Proceeds will establish a college fund for Judge¹s daughter Lyba.
