Punch Nwosu lauds scrapping of sign-on fee for league players JANUARY 17, 2014 BY NAN Ex-international Henry Nwosu on Thursday commended the scrapping of sign-on fees for players in the nation’s apex league, Globacom Premier League by the League Management Company. Nwosu, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abeokuta, said it was better to build the fees into the salary structure. “I think it is good for the Nigerian league because most clubs will promise you N10 million but you will not get even N1 million “It is better we put every payment into the salary structure. If your salary is fatter and you don’t get any sign-on fee, I think it is better. “I don’t have any problem with that as long as the salary will come regularly. That’s what is being practiced in Ogun today. “We don’t pay sign-on fees but the players’ salaries are being paid as at when due”, he said. The Gateway FC of Abeokuta coach, however, disagreed with the minimum three-year contract for players with less than 10 years experience in the league. He said the rule, if applied would amount to tying players down for too long. “Personally, I think two years is enough and after sometime, it can now be reviewed. “We should allow the player some liberty. If he wants to move after a year or two, he should be able to do so. “It may hinder their progress. That’s my opinion. But if the players and the clubs have solid arrangements, then it could be considered,’’ said Nwosu, a former Captain of the then Green Eagles. NAN reports that the abolition of the sign-on fees is one of the major decisions taken by the LMC at the end of its consultative meeting with the club owners on Jan. 13. Also abolished at the meeting are short-term contracts for players that had served less than 10 years in the professional league. These decisions were contained in a document jointly signed by the Chief Operating Officer of the LMC, Salihu Abubakar and the Acting Secretary of the Clubs Owner, Aloy Chukwuemeka.
