Putin is on the march Putin took to the airwaves to officially announce Russia’s annexation of Crimea. While this news came as a shock to no one, many were hoping it wouldn’t come to this because it will alter the geo-political landscape of Eastern Europe. But many political analysts fear this is just Putin’s first step to restore the full size and power of the Soviet Union. Since the political unrest started in the Ukraine, Russian forces were seen to be mobilizing in Crimea. While Russia claims these were regular military drills as per Ukraine and Russia’s prior agreements, Ukraine’s interim president states the Russian military forces had taken control of regional parliament in the province. It was clear from the onset that Putin’s motivations were appropriation. The fact of the matter is, Crimea’s naval port is not worth the world’s collective anger. During a news conference in the Kremlin on Tuesday, Putin repeatedly spoke of restoring Russian pride by rebuilding the Soviet Union. If that in itself is not troubling enough, he went on the call the Ukrainian capital of Kiev “the mother of Russian cities” and during the conference, he very clearly outlined himself as the defender of Russians in post-Soviet states. The appalling conditions for which he is willing to march include discrimination against the Russian language – which can apply to any number of Eastern European countries including Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. Furthermore, Putin has already asked Russia’s parliament to authorize the use of force on the entirety of Ukraine until the socio-political situation is stabilized – presumably in Russia’s favor. Putin is aiming for is a weakened Ukrainian state that will look to Russia for support as opposed to the European Union, or even worse for Russia, NATO. His incremental advances cause European nations to reconsider adding these nations (first Georgia, now Ukraine) to the EU, further pressuring them to join Putin’s upcoming Eurasian Union. This ultimately brings these nations within Russia’s orbit and one step closer to realizing Putin’s dreams of restoring the Soviet Union to its former glory.
