Quick quiz: whats the second thing you should do when you see a baby bird alive but alone on the ground? Answer: check for its parents. Of course, the first thing you do is make sure its safe, away from predators or other dangers. But right after that you should look around to see if mum and/or dad are nearby. And thats exactly what one Yeppoon family did last week when they came across young Aiden, a baby blue-faced honeyeater. Having rescued him from attacking birds and after establishing there was no parent or nest around, they took him home and cared for him as well as they could but realised the best place for Aiden really was with expert wildlife carers. Tough though it was for this very caring family to give up the tiny and adorable baby, they put Aidens best interest first and handed him over to Wildlife Rockhampton. Hes now well settled in care with his foster brother Greg, another lost honeyeater baby. Aiden is now being carefully and professionally looked after. When hes ready he will rejoin his fellow honeyeaters in the wild. Oh, and why should you check for a baby birds parents? Because theyre by far the best option for raising their baby if they can. Wildlife Rockhampton come in a close second of course!
