RESPECT... AND WHY SOME DONT GET IT It was about 12 years ago when I was involved in major ad splashes in the Straits Times. I didnt like it then, and I dont really like it now. Newspaper ads create an image that is larger than life. Some people come to me for help (I do some psychotherapy work on the side). One problem they face is they experience emotional turmoil from a lack of being respected. The trouble with respect is that it cannot come from outside of you. A large proportion of people I met in a counselling setting feel down and depressed when they lack validation from other people. Someone had told me several years ago, he felt sad that his people let him down. In a nutshell, his business had collapsed and his partners walked out on him. He turned it around and now is a multi-million dollar company. What defines how people respect you or not is not the plain sailing or the play safe lifestyle. Instead, it is to know where you are headed. How you hit the road running. Fall. Get up. Repeat. Such true grit can only serve to inspire admiration in others. But few are willing to get hurt doing it in the process. And these few continue to strive and thrive. Occasionally, they reach their goals. But sometimes, its not about the goals themselves but the arduous journey walked. If you want RESPECT, do the unthinkable, create positive value, and inspire others to do the same. But to first do all that, you need to learn to respect the immense power and potential in yourself. Watch Lizzie talk about self-definition in the face of immense rejection. Perhaps, you can discover the message of respect too. youtube/watch?v=c62Aqdlzvqk
