RUMORS HAVE BEEN RUNNING WILD! A message from Police Chief Nick Gailius: There has been some social media chatter regarding possible looting to occur at St. Clair Square in Fairview Heights. I wanted to provide all of you an update, as there appears to be some concerns being expressed that it may not be safe at our Mall. This is wildly inaccurate. There has been NO protesting, no looting, and no indications of any problems there. At this point, we are monitoring social media sites for any indications of problems. We have found one tweet and one Facebook post proposing action at our mall. We received the SAME tweet repeatedly yesterday from concerned citizens, mall employees, and fellow police officers from throughout the region. This ONE tweet comes from a Twitter name of “Long Live Nuski #OTF @2NIKESIGNS21.” FHPD has many contingency plans to deal with problems at the mall – including civil unrest. We have reviewed our plans and contacted neighboring police departments. We put them on notice about this low level social chatter and discussed how they could help us in an emergency. 1. Please let inquirers know that we are monitoring the situation and are prepared if there should be a problem; 2. The level of chatter on social media targeting St. Clair Square is EXTREMELY low (almost all of it is just a re-hash of what is already posted); 3. If you hear or see any additional social media chatter, or are forwarded such, we would appreciate hearing about it; ; JUST FORWARD IT TO OUR FACEBOOK ACCOUNT AT facebook/fairviewpd 4. Regardless of what you may read on Facebook or other social media sites, there are NO legitimate concerns at this point about the mall being unsafe to visit. 5. Should any problems arise, we will be sure to let you know. If you don’t hear it from FHPD, consider it JUST A RUMOR!
