Unhealthy competitive feelings make life a constant and unnecessary struggle. Nobody can probably be good enough because as soon as you catch up with one person you will find another ahead of you. If you run your life this way, you may find life a little bit difficult. Your race to be the best is yours alone, and it is yours to win. God will not measure you against others. He will not even judge you according to what a co-worker accomplishes, what your neighbour drives or whether you are as good as your best friend. He will only judge you by what you have done with the gifts He gave you. He is interested in how confident and secure you are. May be you have not realized this; it takes a lot of energy: physical and emotional, to constantly be in competition with your neighbours, co-workers or family members. When you let go of that need to compete, your freedom begins. The problem with unhealthy competitiveness is that it is a never-ending cycle. There will always be somebody ahead of you; someone with a better job, a bigger circle of friends, a nice car or more money in the bank. My friend, do you the ‘best possible you’ may not be as successful as your neighbour? The best you may not be as educated as your friend; the best you may not be as talented as your co-worker. You can easily get distracted and lose focus by competing and comparing yourself with others. It takes a secure person to say: I am not talented in that area, but I have my own talents. John the Baptist knew who he was (a forerunner) and felt confident and secured enough to tell those asking him as regards that. Pride and competition can make it hard sometimes to admit what you are not. There is actually nothing wrong with looking up to people or learn from people. It is even good to show admiration but that does not mean you should give up your identity for theirs. Therefore, stop thinking that you have to measure up to somebody else to feel good about yourself. Take what God has given you and make the best use of it. Nobody can be a better you than you.
